Is it Time to Start a Home Candle Making Business and Make Money
By Kaye Dennan

A home based candle making business is one that allows for a lot of flexibility, allows for maximum creativity and allows you to grow it with your artistic flare. Owning your own business and doing something that you enjoy is a real delight.

Candle making has several advantages over other types of home based businesses in that candles are really popular. They are real mood setters and people buy them for many reasons. You can cash in on this popularity by designing and making candles to suit customers looking for any of the following:

- Aromatherapy candles

- Votive candles

- Floating candles

- Decorator candles like ice candles or trendy candles

- Fun filled candles made into various shapes that are unique

- Fragrant candles are so popular and are real mood setters

- Feature candles for such occasions as Halloween, Valentine's Day, Christmas and other well celebrated events. There are endless celebrations throughout the year that candles are appropriate to make for

- Wedding, birthday and engagement candles

As you can see the list is almost endless. There is plenty of scope for a home based candle maker to find a niche which will bring them in a good income. Get out there and do your research to see where there is a gap in the market, one that you can fill.

Various outlets to market your own candles:

- Seemingly the obvious is at fairs, shows and fetes

- Party plan is a good idea and you can incorporate other items to sell as well like candle holders, decorator items and/or party items to name a few

- Online marketing is an excellent way to create a market and to continue selling to existing customers through clever email marketing

- Selling wholesale to retail outlets

- when selling to this type of outlet though, care needs to be taken over accounts, payments and displays

- better to sell smaller amounts and get paid than a large quantity and wait for payment or not get it at all

Note the importance of packaging and display of your candles. As a supplier of candles, whether as a retailer or a wholesaler, it is very important to understand the needs and wants of your customers, whether they be the end buyer or a retail shop. Your candles need to be packaged professionally (not necessarily expensively, but with care) and if you are setting up a display it needs to look classy or at least have an individual themed look about it to attract the customers attention.

To get more idea about both of these areas of your business have a look at some of the retail shops in your closest shopping mall and use some of their ideas for inspiration. Colorful candles really lend themselves to be displayed with flare.

If you plan your home candle making business carefully, spend wisely and make a good product, you should do well. The profit in candle making is substantial but make sure you cost in your time. Enjoy!
